사 7:10-14

주님께서 아하스에게 다시 말씀하셨다. "너는 주 너의 하나님에게 징조를 보여 달라고 부탁하여라. 저 깊은 곳 스올에 있는 것이든, 저 위 높은 곳에 있는 것이든, 무엇이든지 보여 달라고 하여라." 아하스가 대답하였다. "아닙니다. 저는 징조를 구하지도 않고, 주님을 시험하지도 않겠습니다." 그 때에 이사야가 말하였다. "다윗 왕실은 들으십시오. 다윗 왕실은 백성의 인내를 시험한 것만으로는 부족하여, 이제 하나님의 인내까지 시험해야 하겠습니까? 그러므로 주님께서 친히 다윗 왕실에 한 징조를 주실 것입니다. 보십시오, 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이며, 그가 그의 이름을 임마누엘이라고 할 것입니다.

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah* said: ‘Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman* is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.*

요 11:1-4

한 병자가 있었는데, 그는 마리아와 그의 자매 마르다의 마을 베다니에 사는 나사로였다. 마리아는 주님께 향유를 붓고, 자기의 머리털로 주님의 발을 씻은 여자요, 병든 나사로는 그의 오라버니이다. 그 누이들이 사람을 예수께로 보내서 말하였다. "주님, 보십시오. 주님께서 사랑하시는 사람이 앓고 있습니다." 예수께서 들으시고 말씀하셨다. "이 병은, 죽을 병이 아니라 오히려 하나님의 영광을 드러낼 병이다. 이것으로 말미암아 하나님의 아들이 영광을 받게 될 것이다.“

Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus,* ‘Lord, he whom you love is ill.’ But when Jesus heard it, he said, ‘This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
