마21:23-32

예수께서 성전에 들어가서 가르치고 계실 때에, 대제사장들과 백성의 장로들이 다가와서 말하였다. "당신은 무슨 권한으로 이런 일을 하시오? 누가 당신에게 이런 권한을 주었소?"

예수께서 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. "나도 너희에게 한 가지를 물어 보겠다. 너희가 대답하면, 나도 무슨 권한으로 이런 일을 하는지를 말하겠다.

요한의 세례가 어디에서 왔느냐? 하늘에서냐? 사람에게서냐?" 그러자 그들은 자기들끼리 의논하며 말하였다. "'하늘에서 왔다'고 말하면, '어째서 그를 믿지 않았느냐'고 할 것이요,

또 '사람에게서 왔다'고 하자니, 무리가 무섭소. 그들은 모두 요한을 예언자로 여기니 말이오."

그래서 그들은 예수께, 모르겠다고 대답하였다. 그러자 예수께서 말씀하셨다. "나도 내가 무슨 권한으로 이런 일을 하는지를 너희에게 말하지 않겠다."

"너희는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 어떤 사람에게 아들이 둘 있는데, 아버지가 맏아들에게 가서 '얘야, 너 오늘 포도원에 가서 일해라' 하고 말하였다.

그런데 맏아들은 대답하기를 '싫습니다' 하고 말하였다. 그러나 그 뒤에 그는 뉘우치고 일하러 갔다.

아버지는 둘째 아들에게 가서, 같은 말을 하였다. 그는 대답하기를, '예, 가겠습니다, 아버지' 하고서는, 가지 않았다.

그런데 이 둘 가운데서 누가 아버지의 뜻을 행하였느냐?" 예수께서 이렇게 물으시니, 그들이 대답하였다. "맏아들입니다." 예수께서 그들에게 말씀을 하셨다. "내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 세리와 창녀들이 오히려 너희보다 먼저 하나님의 나라에 들어간다.

요한이 너희에게 와서, 옳은 길을 보여 주었으나, 너희는 그를 믿지 않았다. 그러나 세리와 창녀들은 믿었다. 너희는 그것을 보고도 끝내 뉘우치지 않았으며, 그를 믿지 않았다.“

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, ‘By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?’ Jesus said to them, ‘I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?’ And they argued with one another, ‘If we say, “From heaven”, he will say to us, “Why then did you not believe him?” But if we say, “Of human origin”, we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.’ So they answered Jesus, ‘We do not know.’ And he said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

‘What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went. The father* went to the second and said the same; and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.
