유대 사람의 유월절이 가까워지자 예수께서 예루살렘으로 올라가셨는데, 성전 뜰에 소와 양과 비둘기를 파는 사람들과 환전상들이 앉아 있는 것을 보시고, 노끈으로 채찍을 만드셔서, 양과 소와 함께 그들을 모두 성전에서 내쫓으시고, 돈을 바꾸어 주는 사람들의 돈을 쏟아 버리시고, 상을 둘러 엎으셨다. 비둘기 파는 사람에게는 "이것을 거둬 치워라. 내 아버지의 집을 장사하는 집으로 만들지 말아라" 하고 말씀하셨다. 제자들은 '주의 집을 생각하는 열정이 나를 삼킬 것이다' 하고 기록된 성경 말씀을 기억하였다. 유대 사람들이 예수께 묻기를 "당신이 이런 일을 하다니, 무슨 표적을 우리에게 보여 주겠습니까?" 하니, 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를 "이 성전을 허물어라. 그러면 내가 사흘 만에 다시 세우겠다" 하였다. 그러자 유대 사람들이 말하였다. "이 성전을 짓는 데 마흔여섯 해나 걸렸는데, 이것을 사흘 만에 세우겠습니까?" 그러나 예수께서 성전이라고 하신 것은 자기 몸을 두고 하신 말씀이었다. 예수께서 죽은 사람 가운데서 살아나신 뒤에야, 제자들은 그가 말씀하신 것을 기억하고서, 성경 말씀과 예수께서 하신 말씀을 믿었다.

The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers at their business. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; you shall not make my Father's house a house of trade." His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for thy house will consume me." The Jews then said to him, "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" But he spoke of the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

사1:11-17

주께서 말씀하신다. "무엇하러 나에게 이 많은 제물을 바치느냐? 나는 이제 숫양의 번제물과 살진 짐승의 기름기가 지겹고, 나는 이제 수송아지와 어린 양과 숫염소의 피도 싫다. 너희가 나의 앞에 보이러 오지만, 누가 너희에게 그것을 요구하였느냐? 나의 뜰만 밟을 뿐이다! 다시는 헛된 제물을 가져 오지 말아라. 다 쓸모 없는 것들이다. 분향하는 것도 나에게는 역겹고, 초하루와 안식일과 대회로 모이는 것도 참을 수 없으며, 거룩한 집회를 열어 놓고 못된 짓도 함께 하는 것을, 내가 더 이상 견딜 수 없다. 나는 정말로 너희의 초하루 행사와 정한 절기들이 싫다. 그것들은 오히려 나에게 짐이 될 뿐이다. 그것들을 짊어지기에는 내가 너무 지쳤다. 너희가 팔을 벌리고 기도한다 하더라도, 나는 거들떠보지도 않겠다. 너희가 아무리 많이 기도를 한다 하여도 나는 듣지 않겠다. 너희의 손에는 피가 가득하다. 너희는 씻어라. 스스로 정결하게 하여라. 내가 보는 앞에서 너희의 악한 행실을 버려라. 악한 일을 그치고, 옳은일을 하는 것을 배워라. 정의를 찾아라. 억압받는 사람을 도와주어라. 고아의 송사를 변호하여 주고 과부의 송사를 변론하여 주어라.“

"What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats. "When you come to appear before me, who requires of you this trampling of my courts? Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and the calling of assemblies -- I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.
