The critical expression is the term in Christ (en christo), which occurs several times in the letter. The preposition en can mean "in" or "by means of" or both at the same time. .....
The New Revised Standard Version regularly translates en christo as "in Christ," influenced no doubt by the cliche as it occurs in Christian theology. In most cases, however, the occurrence of en christo in Galatians should be understood in the sense of "by means of" or "because of." This would be true for "the freedom we have in Christ" (Gal. 2:4), the phrase "justified in Christ" (Gal. 2:27), mention of " the churches of Judea that are in Christ" (Gal. 1:22), and the statement that "in Christ the blessing of Abraham might come to the gentiles" (Gal. 3:14). Nevertheless, there are three statements in which the phrase en christo teases the reader to imagine "being in Christ," as if Christ were a symbol for the collective. In each of the three statements that follow, I have added the emphasis:
For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. (Gal. 3:26)
There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (Gal. 3:28)
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything. (Gal. 5:6)
